A practical guide

Make the handout easier to navigate.

  1. Choose the PDF copy and set the start number, style and placement.
  2. Preview pages with different orientations and check for overlaps.
  3. Create the numbered copy and verify the first and last labels.

Try this example

Start at 1 on a six-page handout and place standard numbers at bottom center. Check that the footer does not cover any instructions.

Before you start: Numbers are visible text overlays. They do not change PDF page labels or remove numbers already printed on the page.

Add a text status mark
What you get

Add page numbers to a PDF and choose their position, starting number and style.

Limits and important details

Bates: one PDF up to 10 MiB/200 pages, 40 MiB output, printable ASCII prefix up to 24 characters and suffix up to 16, 1-9 minimum digits and counters up to 999999999. This is not multi-file batch numbering or a certified legal workflow. Numbering adds text; it does not change PDF page labels or remove existing numbers. Overlays may cover content. Pages smaller than 72 pt and unsupported rotations are rejected.

Example

Start at 3 for a report with a separate cover and contents page. Choose bottom center, then Preview latest PDF after conversion.
