Split PDF by Bookmarks

Split a bookmarked guide into chapter PDFs so each section can be shared on its own.

Two real chapter bookmarks start at pages 1 and 4. Splitting by bookmarks should produce two three-page PDFs.

Your documents stay on this device. Tool downloads and usage statistics do not include file contents.

A practical guide

Separate the chapters already marked in the guide.

  1. Choose a PDF whose top-level bookmarks mark chapter starts.
  2. Select bookmark splitting and run the task.
  3. Open the ZIP and verify each chapter title and page range.

Try this example

Use the six-page sample with top-level chapter bookmarks at pages 1 and 4. The ZIP should contain chapter PDFs for pages 1-3 and 4-6; check the titles and ranges.

Combine chosen chapters
What you get

Split a PDF at its supported top-level bookmarks. The result is a ZIP with one PDF for each chapter; PDFs without supported bookmarks cannot be split this way.

Limits and important details

10 MiB input, 200 pages and 40 chapters including front matter. Only supported local PDF bookmarks that target pages in increasing order are used; forms, links, annotations, external actions and unsupported bookmark structures require manual page ranges. The result is a ZIP of chapter PDFs.

Example

Use the six-page sample PDF with top-level chapter bookmarks at pages 1 and 4. Split in bookmark mode, then inspect the ZIP: the chapter PDFs should cover pages 1-3 and 4-6. This follows PDF bookmarks, not headings detected in page text.
