Batch Bates Numbering

Give several family or household PDFs one continuous reference number sequence, so every page in the set can be cited.

Two PDFs with three labeled pages each. With prefix DOC- from 1, the first file should get DOC-000001 to DOC-000003 and the second DOC-000004 to DOC-000006, as listed in bates-index.csv.

A practical guide

One numbering for the whole set.

  1. Choose up to 50 PDFs and set their order in the file list.
  2. Set the prefix, first number and minimum digits; numbering continues across files.
  3. Number the set, then check bates-index.csv against the first and last page of each file.

Try this example

Number a tenancy dispute set of lease, letters and receipts as HOME-0001 onward so each page can be referred to by number.

Number several PDFs with one continuous Bates counter in the order you set. Get a ZIP of numbered PDFs and a CSV index of each file's first and last number.

Limits and important details

Up to 50 PDFs, 10 MB each, 60 MB and 1,000 pages in total. Prefix up to 24 printable ASCII characters, suffix up to 16, 1-9 digits and counters up to 999,999,999.

Number the two sample PDFs with prefix DOC- from 1: the first gets DOC-000001 to DOC-000003 and the second DOC-000004 to DOC-000006, as listed in bates-index.csv.
